“I am a traditional wine producer. My aim is to express in my wines the full gusto della mia terra – to convey as purely and directly as possible the tastes and flavours of my land. I do this by tending my grapes as carefully as I can, for they are the vehicle by which I am able to achieve this expression.” Following the tradition of viticulture in Le Langhe, the vineyards of Cascina Fontana are located across various wine communes. Vines grown on different terrain, with different exposure and microclimate may yield grapes with markedly different character. Having vineyards spread across a wide area is also prudent in a region close to the mountains where there is always the risk of hail, which can destroy a vineyard in seconds and minutes. In Castiglione Falletto, Cascina Fontana has parcels of the cru vineyards Villero and Valletti, planted with Nebbiolo grapes destined to make Barolo, while the vineyard of Pozzo is cultivated with Nebbiolo (for Nebbiolo delle Langhe) as well as Barbera. Gallinotto, located below the town of Barolo in the commune of La Morra, is cultivated with Nebbiolo for Barolo as well as with a smaller percentage of Dolcetto grapes. The Vigna del Castello vineyard in Sinio sees Nebbiolo planted along the lower, more protected rows where the soil is the classic white clay of Le Langhe, then progressively higher, first Barbera, and finally Dolcetto. |
